Our Calabash items are handmade by artisans in Senegal. The shell of a fruit (type of gourd) is dried out and then carved into bowls and other utensils. Some see Calabash as a solution to combatting plastic waste because of its biodegradable form.
Traditionally used for cooking; to carve into musical instruments; to store and serve milk (in the Peulh tradition); to deliver traditional medicine; to eat lakh (Senegalese millet) - eating lakh in a lekket bowl is part of many traditional wedding rituals in Senegal.
Calabash is believed by some to bring wealth and abundance because the fruit tends to grow abundantly. Some elders store their money in lekket containers because they believe it will increase their wealth.
