"Wurus" means gold in Wolof. We believe our skin and hair is more precious.
There are not a lot of formal job opportunities in Senegal for the youth. Many young people earn advanced degrees and have a hard time finding jobs in the formal market. Some leave Senegal in search of better opportunities and others stay home and become entrepreneurs.
My cousin stayed.
And she used her knowledge of local flora and fauna to start making her own skincare products after noticing that many of the skincare products in Senegal are imported and/or contain skin lightening agents.
In December 2020, I tried her body butter, which was made with shea butter, cocoa butter and other natural oils. I never used a product like it. So I decided at that moment to become her partner and bring Wurus with me to the states.
Because I believe everyone deserves to experience the joy I felt seeing my skin glow like Gold.
Wurus was started in February 2021 and it is a joint project between my cousin and I. My cousin (pictured right) is behind the recipes for all the products sold on this page. I (pictured left) am behind the packaging, marketing and communications of Wurus.
We are learning each day what it takes to run a business. But we are excited to share Wurus with the world.
